Of all the first-generation house DJs, only Rauhofer and David Morales remain at the top of their game, regularly releasing CDs full of fresh interest for an eager fan base. Rauhofer’s Live @ Roxy series showcases this Austrian’s personal style: plush deep beats, blissed-out, queer-eye vocals by both girls and guys, salacious humor, and tracks both well known and unknown. (Madonna’s "Mother & Father," Seal’s "Killer," and up-and-coming house diva Suzanne Palmer are mixed into this two-disc set.) The textures here may surprise fans: though the loopy vocals and overstated rhythm tracks that give his sessions their sardonic, burlesquing feel remain, Rauhofer brings trance into the fold with lush melodicism, fast (and often cold) electronic beats, and acid scratch. His new diva selections sound intense rather than goofy. DJ Will Beats’ "Insanity" is an obsessed, trancy drum workout unlike the plaintively sung, easy-going house hit "Time" (by Murk), which ended Live @ Roxy, Vol. 3. "Time" sent a simple message: "All I want is to spend time with you." "Insanity" is darker than the Viennese masquerade of Rauhofer’s past segues — it’s appropriate to the times we live (and dance) in.
