This October 2004 recording of a concert at the historic San Francisco music hall captures the brotherly Texas trio doing what they do best: meat-and-potatoes rock with sweet close harmonies, big hooks, and fat guitar riffs. From the dreamer’s fantasy "Hollywood" to the closing, bilingual smash "Heaven," a prayer for deliverance that cracked the pop Top 10 three months before this show was recorded, it’s all smooth, medium-tempo, and pleasing. The standout instrumental voice is guitarist Henry Garza’s: inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Carlos Santana, his playing sparks the energy level every time he takes a solo, delivering bold tones and sliding, bent notes that sing as sweetly as the harmonies he sings with Ringo (yes, drums) and Jojo (bass). His instrumental showcase "Onda" is a study in terse, incendiary beauty. As anyone who’s heard Los Lonely Boys on the radio knows, they aren’t terribly original, but they work hard on stage and sound damn good under any circumstances.
